There is no specific formula for asking for prayers and peace and blessings upon prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). Following The Lord's command, Muslim scholars over the ages have produced prayer manuals of utmost beauty and eloquence. None has been more appreciated and widespread than al-Jazuli’s masterwork "Dalayel Al- Khayrat", from 15th century Morocco. | |
Al-Jazuli | |
Al-Jazuli
(or Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Suleiman Ibn Abi Bakr Al-Jazuli [of
Jazula] Al-Simlali [of Simalal] Al-Hasny [of the descendants of
Al-Hasan Ibn Ali, the Prophet's grandson]) was born in 807 AH among the
Jazulah Berbers of the
Sus
valley region in southern Morocco. He studied in the religious Madrasat As-Saffareen in Fez where his room is still shown to visitors. His studies took him to many areas in the Maghreb, including Marrakesh, Telmesan and Tunisia. He spent many years in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, and visited Egypt and Tripoli. He was initiated into the Shadhili Way (Tariqa or Path) and remained in a seclusion of prayers (khilwa or solitary retreat) for fourteen years. Upon returning to Fez, he was ordained as a sheikh of the tariqa and completed Dalayel Al-Khayrat. He moved south to Safy, where his followers increased tremendously, which resulted in the governor banishing him and his followers. In return, Al-Jazuli prayed for The Lord’s wrath to befall the town, and it was captured and occupied by the Portuguese for forty years. The governor of Safi is suspected to have poisoned Jazuli and caused his death around 870 AH (exact date of death not known but is between 869 and 875). Al-Jazuli's body did not find rest for a very long time after death. One of his followers, Amr Ibn Solaiman AshShayzami (known as Amr "the Swordsman"), followed all suspected of poisoning him and killed them. "The Swordsman" believed that Al-Jazuli possessed supernatural mystical powers even as a corpse. He exhumed the body, placed it in a coffin, and took the coffin along to every battle to help him win. On return from battle, he used to place the coffin under heavy guard day and night, lighting huge candles around it all night in fear that if it was stolen he would no longer find victory. He waged many wars and battles to subdue people to follow him and Al-Jazuli's "tariqa". This lasted for twenty years, and the remains were only buried after Amr the "Swordsman" died. Yet seventy seven years later, the body was exhumed again by The Sultan Abul Abbas “The Limp” and moved to Marrakesh to finally come to rest. It is said that once, when he could not find water to prepare for prayers (wadu' or oblution), he came upon a well but could not reach the water without a bucket and rope which he did not have. While thus helpless, he was seen by a young girl who called out to him: “You’re the one people praise so much, yet you can’t even figure out how to get water out of a well?” She came down and spat into the water, whereupon the water rose to the top of its own accord. Seeing this miracle, he asked the girl "How did you achieve doing this?" She replied "I was enabled to do this simply through my "Making constant prayer for God to send prayers upon the best of creation by the number of breaths and heartbeats" (or through constantly asking The Lord to send prayers upon the prophet). |
|
Having thus
seen the benefit of asking for prayers upon the Prophet, Sallallahu
‘alaihi wa Sallam, Al-Jazuli vowed to write a work to include prayers
to The Lord
asking to send prayers upon Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa
Sallam, or his Dalayel Al-Khayrat, which became the most celebrated
manual of prayers upon the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). The book is organized in sections, so that each section “contains diverse praises, invocations, and poetic references seamlessly bound into a flowing unity. Its melodic, rhythmic language aids the devotee in memorization and attaining presence of heart. Its phrases of exquisite beauty express love and devotion to the Chosen One (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) (Adam Larson) |
|
His spiritual
path drew many disciples due to the popularity of his Dalayel
Al-Khayrat. He taught followers the value of prayers upon the Prophet
(Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam), extinction of self in the love of The
Lord and His messenger, disclaiming any strength or power, and total
reliance upon The Lord. Of his most beautiful verses addressing the
prophet: |
|
يَا رَحْمَةَ
اللهِ اِنِّىْ خَائِفٌ وَّجِلٌ يَا نِعْمَةَ اللهِ
اِنِّىْ مُفْلِسٌ عَان O Lord’s mercy, I am frightened and terrified O Lord’s grace I am poor and broke وَلَيْسَ لِىْ عَمَلٌ اَلْقَى الْعَلِيْمَ بِه سِوى مَحَبَّتِكَ الْعُظْمى وَ اِيْمَانِىْ And I am devoid of deeds with which to meet The All-Knowing Other than my immense love for you and my faith |
|
The book of
Dalayel Al-Khayrat swept the whole Islamic world. Princes exchanged
magnificently embellished copies of it,
commoners treasured it, and pilgrims wore it at their side on the way
to hajj. Everyone who read it found that blessings (baraka) descended
upon wherever it was recited. It is the most popular and most
universally acclaimed collection of asking The Lord to send prayers
upon the Prophet. Among some Sunni religious orders, specially the
Shadhili-Jazuli order, its recitation is a daily practice. In others
its recitation is voluntary. A lot of Salawat books have been written since, but none achieved the eminence and fame of Dalayel Al-Khayrat. However, in recent times, a lot of dispute has surrounded the book. The Salafy and Wahabi followers of Ibn Taymeya rule that it contains a lot that is not of true faith, and does not comply with true Islam or Islamic doctrine. The Sufis, on the other hand, cherish the book and defend it. We should, however, be assured that the book was written in pure love for the prophet, and directs Muslims to the benefits and the various ways of asking for prayers upon the prophet to follow The Lord’s clear order and directive: “Allah and His angels send prayers on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye prayers on him and salute him with all respect” (Al-Ahzab 33:56) |

How to Read Dalayel Al-Khayrat |
|
The
book is organized in sections, so that each section “contains diverse
praises, invocations, and poetic references seamlessly bound into a
flowing unity. ... Its phrases of exquisite beauty express love and
devotion to the Chosen One (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam)" (Adam Larson)
The salawat of Dalayel AlKhayrat are divided to sections for daily reading by one of several ways: 8 Hizbs, or 4 quarters, or 3 thirds, or 2 halves. A prayer section and the names of The Lord and Prophet are to be read before a new beginning of the Salawat, and a prayer section is to be read at the end. There are several ways to read Dalayel Al-KHayrat: If you wish to read this as part of a daily litany (wird), you should begin by one Hizb (section) each day. If you miss a day, you may make it up the next day if you like, but it is also okay to pick up with the hizb for that day and continue. The du'aa “Before Beginning" Salawat and “After End" of Salawat are to be read every day before and after each hizb or section. It is also traditional to read the 99 Names of the Lord (Al-Asmaa ul-Husna) (saying “jalla jallallahu” after each name) and the Names of the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) before beginning a new reeading of the whole Dalayel AlKhayrat. Example: One hizb a day method: 1. Read the section “Before
Beginning”
2. Read the "99 Names of the Lord" 3. Read the Names of the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) 4. Read the 1st Hizb 5. Close with “After End” The next day (Tuesday) repeat “Before
Beginning” and
then skip #2 and
#3 and go directly to the 2nd Hizb, and so on for the rest of
the week.
On the following Monday, repeat “Before
Beginning”,
read the final, 8th Hizb, and then have the option to
read the 1st
Hizb immediately to begin the next week or proceed to “After
End” and
then start over
again from the beginning 1,2,3 etc…
The audio file is divided
into hizbs, and is placed at the beginning of each
hizb. You can listen to the audio while reading the hizb or by
dwnlading the files here. |

O
Lord, by the glory of Sayyidina Mohammed Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam,
and his status with
You, and Your love for him and his love for You, and by the secret
between You and him, I beseech You to send prayers and peace and
greetings upon him and upon his family and companions. And please Lord,
multiply my love for him, and acquaint me with his dues and ranks, and
enable me to follow him and follow his culture and course. And bring me
together with him, and pleasure me by seeing him, and delight me by
talking to him. And free me of all obstacles and hinders and
intermediaries and veils. And sweeten my ears with his enjoyable talk,
and prepare me to be receptive of him, and qualify me to serve him. And
make my asking for prayers upon him a luminous complete pure purified
light that wipes away all wrongs and doubts and idolation and atheism
and falsehood and burden. And make it a cause for reaching the highest
levels of sincerity and speciality, so that I am purified of worshiping
anyone but You, and I become fit for Your presence, and become of Your
special people, always following his manners Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa
Sallam, and deriving from
his exalted presence at all times and moments. O Allah, O Light, O
Truth, O Clarifier. |

O
Lord, I intend to send prayers upon the prophet, in submission to Your
directive and believing your prophet, and as a token of love for him,
and because of yearning for him, and as magnification for his
magnitude, and because he Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam merits this. So
please Lord, accept
them from me by Your grace, and make me among Your righteous
worshipers. O Lord, please increase him in honor over what You bestowed
upon him, and in grace over what You gave him, and in light over that
from which You created him, and elevate his rank among the ranks of the
messengers, and his level among the levels of the prophets. And I pray
for Your acceptance and his acceptance O Lord of all worlds, and pray
for continuous well-being, and that I die following the book and the
course (sunna) and the group, and for ability to declare the
attestation (shahada)
without change or alteration. And please forgive me my sins, by Your
Favor and Benevolence and Generosity, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
And The Lord sent prayers upon Sayyidina Mohammed, the final prophet,
and the imam of the messengers, and upon all his family and companions,
and peace and greetings upon the messengers, and praise and gratitude
be to Allah, The Lord of all worlds. |

O Lord, please
renew and send, at this time and this hour, Your complete prayers and
noble greetings and grandest fullest continuous gratification upon Your
most complete slave out of all people in this world. You made him
Your shadow, and made him a Qibla and direction for people’s needs. You
selected him for Yourself, and set him with Your argument and displayed
him as Your image. You selected him to be a level for Your appearance
and a landing to execute Your orders and prohibitions in Your earth and
heavens, and an intermediary between You and Your creation.
Please relay
the greetings of this slave to him, and send upon him the
noblest prayers and best greetings and gloriest peace. O Lord, please
remind him of me so he will mention me with You by what You know is
beneficial for me sooner and later, as much as he knows You and as much
as his ranking with You, not as much as my knowledge and the limit of
my understanding, for You are worthy of every grace, and upon what You
wish You are able.
And please Lord
place me in the heart of this complete person, and make him love me.
And The Lord
sent prayers upon Sayyidina and our protector Mohammed as
plenty as all the atoms of existence, and as plenty as The Lord’s
knowledge. And Lord please aid me to continuously read it. Amen, O Lord

Whose Essence is Sanctified beyond all resemblance, and whose Traits are Virtuous beyond similarities. He is One not from lack, and He is Present not because of cause; known for Beneficence and described by Compassion; known Without Limit and described Without End, First Without Beginning and Last Without End; No child is related to Him, and He is not worn by times and not tired by years. All creatures are subduable to His greatness, and His command is by a “B” and an “E” (“kaf” wa “nuun”). Through remembering Him the faithful find amity, and through seeing Him eyes find comfort, and through unifying Him the unifiers find delight. He guided the obedient to a straight path, and permitted His lovers to heavens and paradise. And He counted the breaths of His creatures with His old knowledge, and sees the movement of ants’ legs in the deep darkness of the night. He is praised by birds in their nests and is glorified by beasts in their wilderness. He encompasses all people’s declared and secret deeds, and guarantees His support and victory for the pious; and apprehensive hearts are comforted through remembering Him and through His graceful healing. “And among His signs is this, that the heavens and earth stand fast by his command ...“[30:25]. His knowledge encompasses everything, and He forgave the sinners by His generosity and tolerance. Not a thing is similar to Him, and He is The All-Hearing and The All-Seeing. | الذي

O Lord, spare us evil with what You wish and as You wish, for You are capable of everything (x3), O Best Protector and Best Supporter, we pray for Your forgiveness, O Lord, and our destiny is at Your direction, and there is no help or power save with Allah, the All High and Mighty. Praise be to You O Lord. Complimenting You is beyond our count, You are as You complimented Yourself. Glorified is Your Face, and Mighty is Your Eminence. The Lord does as He pleases by His Power, and rules as He wishes by His Might. O Living, O Self Subsisting, O Deviser of heavens and earth, O Lord of Glory and Honor. There is no God save You. We plead for Your mercy, and pray that You protect us from Your torture, O Saviour of whoever pleads for You. There is No God save You. By the glory of Sayyidina Mohammed, Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam, please rescue us and have mercy on us. “...The mercy of God and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Glorious.” (11:73). "...Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from You, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying." (33:33). “The Lord and His angels send prayers upon the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye prayers upon him and salute him with all respect” (Al-Ahzab 33:56) O Dear Lord, please send the best prayers upon the happiest of Your creatures, Sayyidina Mohammed, and upon his family and companions and cast peace and greetings, as plenty as Your knowledge, and as plenty as the ink for Your words, whenever You are remembered by the remembering, and whenever his remembrance is forgotten by the forgetting. | اللهم
